In the England of 1820, the only profession available to women is being a wife, but Kate Worthington knows she never wants to get married. Her plan is to travel to India to escape the family she hates. Her controlling mother says she can go under one condition: she has to receive and reject three marriage proposals. Agreeing to do her part, Kate travels to Blackmoore Mansion to ask her childhood friend, Henry Delafield, for help. Once she gets there, she soon realizes that there are no plans when it comes to love. Will she actually be able to reject a proposal that could open up her heart for good?
