Charlotte Markey

Charlotte N. Markey, Ph.D. is a body image expert, professor of psychology and director of the Health Sciences Center at Rutgers University-Camden. She has recently published a book called "The Body Image Book For Girls: Love Yourself and Grow Up Fearless." It is an easy-to-read and beautifully illustrated guide that teaches young girls how to nurture both mental and physical heath to improve their own body image, shows the positive impact they can have on others, and enables them to go out into the world feeling fearless! "Being You: The Body Image Book for Boys" will be available in April, 2022.Background:Dr. Markey received her doctorate from the University of California-Riverside in health and developmental psychology, with a focus on eating behaviors and body image. She has been conducting research on eating, dieting, body image, and obesity risk for nearly 25 years! She has also conducted research at the Healthy Families Project at the University of California and the Children's Eating Lab at Pennsylvania State University. Her current research takes place in her Healthy Development Lab at Rutgers University-Camden; she also serves as a consultant for the Center for State Health Policy at Rutgers University-Camden.Published Work:Her first book, Smart People Don't Diet: How the Latest Science Can Help You Lose Weight Permanently (2014; Da Capo Lifelong Press) was regarded as being "possibly the best book about weight loss ever written," by Scientific American. Her second book (co-edited with Elizabeth Daniels and Meghan Gillen) , Body Positive: Understanding and Improving Body Image in Science and Practice was published by Cambridge University Press in the summer of 2018. Initial reviews refer to the book as having, "the real potential to enrich lives" (Marika Tiggemann, Flinders University, Australia) and, "providing a novel and refreshing way of conceptualizing body image" (Marita McCabe, Australian Catholic University) . Furthermore, Body Positive has been " ... recommend[ed] with enthusiasm for anyone who wants to gain the most current knowledge from a concisely written work" (Sarah Murnen, Kenyon College) . Dr. Markey has published over 100 book chapters and journal articles in peer-reviewed journals. She has hundreds of presentations to her name at universities across the U.S., in addition to national and international conferences. Each year, she teaches hundreds of students at Rutgers University, including students in her Psychology of Eating course, where a great deal of time is spent discussing body image.
