"The idea for this book originated with our celebration of the bi-centennial of the War of 1812, and a booklet we created to spotlight the women who were living in Tennessee at that time. As we identified those women, and tried to write a brief sketch of their lives, it became obvious that not much was written about most of them. Realizing that our Tennessee Daughters were the keepers of the stories of their ancestors, and that many of them were Tennesseans, we decided to ask them to share that information with us for a book that would memorialize their lives and families. Hoping that we would be able to persuade them to send us at least one woman's story from each of our ninety-five chapters, we were thrilled when they responded so enthusiastically with almost three times that many.
