About this item

Informative and amusing, this heavily illustrated travel guide contains key visitor information for more than 700 museums as well as a handful of castles and stately houses. The guide is arranged by county, followed by sections on Scotland and Wales. It is exceptionally well laid out, covering nearly all museums from the humble to the grand. Listings include descriptive text and color photographs, along with practical information such as opening times, travel directions, maps, and contact information (e-mail is generally lacking). On the downside, some of the museum descriptions read like press releases. In addition, there are no overall alphabetical or subject indexes, and no URLs for web sites. Despite some flaws, this guide is an excellent resource that will prove useful for years, complimented by British annuals such as The Guide to Art Exhibitions 2000-2001 (Pocket, 1999) and forthcoming The National Trust Handbook 2000 (National Trust).
