About this item

Have you ever wondered what the Old Testament -- especially the Old Testament law -- has to do with your Christian life? You are not alone. Some Christian leaders believe we should cast off the Old Testament now that we have the New. Carmen Joy Imes disagrees. In this warm, accessible volume, Imes takes readers back to Sinai, the ancient mountain where Israel met their God, and explains the meaning of events there. She argues that we've misunderstood the command about "taking the Lord's name in vain." Instead, Imes says that this command is about "bearing God's name," a theme that continues throughout the rest of Scripture. Readers will revisit the story of Israel as they trudge through the wilderness from a grueling past to a promising future.

About the Author

Carmen Joy Imes

My career in Biblical Studies began in 2nd grade, when I gathered my friends on the playground during recess to begin a Bible read-through. I never really moved on to other interests, though I'm curious about nearly everything! I earned a BA in Bible/Theology (Multnomah University) , an MA in Biblical Studies (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) , and a PhD in Biblical Theology with a concentration in Old Testament (Wheaton College) . I teach Old Testament at Prairie College in Alberta. Current areas of scholarly research include Exodus, the Sinai narratives, clothing in the Hebrew Bible, metaphor in the Bible, and clothing metaphors in the Psalms. I'm particularly passionate about bridging the gap between the church and the academy, helping laypeople discover accessible resources for biblical study. Current projects include a book about Sinai (IVP Academic) and a commentary on Exodus (Baker Academic) .
