James, an enslaved man, remains a mystery but his compelling story offers insight into the cost of pursuing freedom. Tim's book (Abrams, 2015) was a finalist for the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award in 2016. He lives in northern Virginia and completed twenty years working at the Smithsonian Institution.
