About this item

Gr. 7-10. With the debate raging over community service within our public schools as well as the necessity for more and more charitable agencies to pick up services from the public sector, Meltzer's book fills a gap in middle- and high-school collections for both research and simple information. Altruistic organizations such as CARE, the Peace Corps, Habitat for Humanity, and Volunteers of America as well as individual humanitarians such as Oskar Schindler, Eugene Lang (who promised college educations to 61 New York sixth-graders), and Jean-Henri Dunant (founder of the Red Cross) are all gathered together in a single volume. In source notes at the end of the book, Meltzer admits that he had a difficult time organizing the vast amounts of information into a cohesive whole.
