Kyra Sedgwick goes out with a big twanging bang in the seventh and final season of The Closer. And did you expect anything less? The Closer has consistently been one of TV's smartest police procedurals, with an ensemble cast of top-notch characters. But of course it's anchored by Sedgwick's LAPD Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, who's equal parts neurotic, charming, and laser-focused as a detective. Sedgwick's Johnson is likable, yet exasperating; admirable, yet sometimes slightly ridiculous; responsible, yet occasionally flaky. It's a delight to see a character so well written and well acted in such a mainstream TV series. In the final season, the storylines are compelling and fresh, and sometimes disturbing. One story arc this season involves an especially bloody mass slaying at a ritzy mansion where hip-hop stars are known to hang. As always, the supporting cast adds credibility and richness--and the camaraderie among the Major Crimes unit is utterly believable. Standouts include G.W. Bailey as crusty Lt. Provenza; Michael Paul Chan as the dependable Lt. Tao; J.K. Simmons as Assistant Chief Will Pope; and smooth talker Tony Denison as Lt. Flynn. Johnson's family is also a delight. Her endlessly patient husband, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney) , plays off Johnson's frazzled workaholism. And as her parents, Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin appear only rarely, but always memorably. The boxed set includes loads of great extras that any fan of The Closer will savor: deleted scenes, a gag reel that shows just how much fun the cast is having after seven years of working together, and a terrific roundtable feature of the cast and crew talking, no holds barred, about what they believe is the appeal of The Closer.
