About this item

From School Library Journal Gr 5-8 - Each action-packed volume contains three short, graphic-novel-style tales, all colorfully rendered, that portray real events, such as Major Willard Bennett's courageous medevac flight in Vietnam, President Kennedy's meetings during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea, and many other historical events. Relevant encyclopedic entries at the beginning and end of each book provide a historical context to the stories, while a glossary explains specific technical, political, and military terminology. This is a vivid and dramatic depiction of history, rife with explosions, dueling fighter planes, and battlefield sequences. It is important to note that these illustrations involve guns and bullets, and there are bloody images that successfully convey the messiness, violence, and ambiguity of American-Soviet relations.

About the Author

Gary Jeffrey

Gary Jeffrey, from Clacton on-Sea, Essex, UK, was a boy who grew up wanting to be an artist. Which worked okay for ten years until the pressing needs of a burgeoning family forced the young dreamer to nut up and get a job.

He ended up working as a graphic designer for a small non-fiction children's book publisher in London, UK. Part of his job was adapting biographies and history into comics. Over the course of a decade writing and story boarding these comics he grew to love the medium and became excited by its possibilities.

He decided to make something of his own and, voila--he now makes true crime comics in his spare time! Bonnie and Clyde--The Beginning (McFarland, fall 2013) is the first published of these -- check it out (but bear in mind all my other books are for 11 year-olds!)
