About the Author

Laura S. Jeffrey

Laura STASSI, under the byline Laura S. Jeffrey, is the author of almost two dozen nonfiction books for the school and library market.

Laura loves meeting people and unearthing the extraordinary stories contained within seemingly ordinary lives. Her first published piece profiled the parents of a fallen Marine who channeled their grief into establishing one of the nation's first volunteer support groups for military families.

Among the other amazing people she's interviewed are the daughters of legendary civil rights figures Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz; pioneering journalist Randy Shilts shortly before he died of the disease he extensively chronicled in And The Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic; and her own mother, whose memories of living room dance parties with childhood friends Nelle "Harper" Lee and Truman Capote informed a travel feature she wrote for The Washington Post.

Laura's freelance feature articles have also been published in The Post's Food and Style sections as well as the Military Times newspapers, ARMY magazine and other publications.
