About this item

Ironically, as we move toward a more technologically advanced world, the simple domestic crafts of old are making a comeback. People of all ages are discovering a deep love for weaving, knitting, crocheting and other fiber arts. Along with that has come the desire to create their own one of a kind, artisan yarns. When it comes to yarn, fiber lovers know that spinning and dying go hand in hand. Yet many books on the yarn craft cover only one topic or the other. In Spinning and Dyeing Yarn, fiber artist Ashley Martineau covers both subjects with rich, illustrative detail and step-by-step tutorials. Simply put, this book a must have for fiber enthusiasts of all levels. Inside, four sections cover: Fiber Identification and Preparation Explains the various fiber types--from animal wools and plant fibers to silk and synthetics-- how to clean and store them, and preparation techniques for spinning.

About the Author

Ashley Martineau

I never expected to write a book. I started knitting when I was newlywed and got bored with the yarns at local craft stores. So I went online and found handspun art yarn and wanted to do that. But there were no videos, no classes, no teachers in my area. So I bought a spinning wheel online and taught myself how to spin. I brought my first yarns to a knitting group and they all sold. Then I decided to begin my own little yarn shop in my tiny apartment to help make ends meet.Fast forward 10+ years and now I'm an Author?! WOW. I wrote this book with the questions and thoughts and feelings I had when I first started spinning. I wrote it to people who have never touched a wheel, who weren't concerned with doing things perfectly, who just want to spin yarn. I included tutorials and tips on building your own spinning equipment on the cheap. This book is not a technical manual, more of a guide to creating yarns that you will love to work with.I'm also a stay at home mom to a sweet little hobbit named Sam. Still happily married to my best friend Brian, and living in Massachusetts. I still spin yarn and sell it at local yarn shops. I love washing and dyeing wool, and I sell bags of spinning fibers in my shop: www.shopneauveau.com. Proceeds from my shop help with our everyday needs (food, diapers, gas...) I also have free video tutorials on YouTube to teach different spinning and fiber art techniques. And I occasionally teach classes at local yarn shops.Happy Spinning!
