About the Author

Tom Ang

Photographer, author, and educator. Travel and digital photography have been my love, but I'm best known as the author of over 40 books (over 190 if you count all the co-editions) . They're almost all on photography and include the best-selling Digital Photographer's Handbook published in twenty languages and sold over 700,000 copies. My award-winning 'Photography - the definitive visual history' is a lavish and rich history of photography from a fresh perspective that was published in 2014. It's the book I'm most proud of. The latest, is my 'Photography - history:art:technique' is a beautifully packaged up-date of the perennial Eyewitness Companion Photography book.In 2019, I was awarded the prestigious Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) prize for Photography Content Creator in recognition of my authorship, workshops and teaching activities. That year, I also had to honour of co-presenting the HIPA ceremony in Dubai Opera.I've had the luck to present two ground-breaking six-part series 'A Digital Picture of Britain' and 'Britain in Pictures' for BBC. That led to writing and presenting an eight-part series for Channel News Asia, Singapore in 2009. This won Bronze at the New York Film & TV Awards that year. My 'Digital Photography Masterclass' was named The Crème De La Crème of the Top Digital Imaging Books of 2008 by Shutterbug and Best How-to Book of 2008 by Library Journal. I won the Thomas Cook Award for Best Illustrated Travel Book for his book on the Marco Polo Expedition back in 1988. Going back further, I was Technical Editor of 'Camera' magazine; editor of 'Photography' magazine; Picture Editor of 'The Sunday Correspondent Magazine'. I held the post of Senior Lecturer in photographic practice at the University of Westminster for over 12 years. During the university tenure, I was a pioneer of academic links to the Former Soviet Central Asia, leading a Know How Fund project for journalism in Kyrgyzstan. I am a founding member of the World Photographic Academy and was for many years the photography chair for the Royal Geographical Society's Expedition Workshops. I've been a jury member on Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Czech Press Photo, Sony World Photography Awards, Hamdam International Photography Award.I was born in Singapore and now live in New Zealand.
