About this item

John Marquez is back - but his mission is the same: shut down animal traffickers.  Still attached to the California Fish & Game's Special Operations Unit, it's the open, unsolved investigations that now land on his desk. Then a tip call comes which reveals the location of a gun used to kill two young women camping along the Klamath River two years ago. At the same time, Marquez is on the hunt for a notorious animal trafficker known as Rider, who’s rumoured to have a hideout in mountainous northern California. The subsequent discovery of thousands of invasive northern pike triggers a cascade of clues and questions that draws Marquez away from his pursuit of Rider. Or do they? Is there a connection? When a Siskiyou County investigator and an ambitious sheriff question Marquez’s interest in the murders of the two women and his relentless presence in the remote northern county, the stakes rise ever higher – and the way forward is fraught with risk.

About the Author

Kirk Russell

I'm an inveterate reader. I'll read across the board but as a writer crime fiction hooked me for the way the genre let's you write at something morally ambiguous without getting stranded in it. I've written nine crime novels. In Shell Games, Night Game, Dead Game, Redback, and Die-Off a California Fish and Game lieutenant is running an undercover team called the Special Operations Unit. Three more recent, A Killing in China Basin Counterfeit Road, and One Through The Heart, are with a San Francisco homicide inspector. Most of it is in country I know, but none of it would have worked without the help of the real life Fish and Game undercover team and two San Francisco homicide inspectors. Which is another good thing about crime fiction. My latest, Signature Wounds, launches a new series with FBI special agent bomb tech, Paul Grale. It's a topical story. One that could happen. My wife, Judy Rodgers, co-owner of San Francisco's Zuni Cafe and great chef, died too young three years ago of cancer, a very hard reminder that it all goes by too fast. After Judy's death I resolved to write stories that are about now. About our times. Grale is part of that. For more visit kirkrussellbooks.com
