About the Author

Dick Linford

Dick Linford was born in western Wyoming and raised there and in New Mexico. He went to California to play football and go to college, in that order of importance. Football didn't work out, but he did graduate from the University of California at Berkeley. Upon graduating he became a high school teacher. While teaching he read about river trips in the Grand Canyon. When he realized that he couldn't afford to pay for a trip he talked himself into a job as a river guide on that company's California trips. It was the perfect summer job. After his first training trip he knew he had found his calling. He managed that company's California operation his second year, and also convinced fellow teacher Joe Daly to become a guide as well. That winter the two of them decided to start their own company, ECHO River Trips (echotrips.com.)That was in 1972. ECHO just finished its 41st year of running trips, is still owned by Linford and Daly, and often referred to as The Dick And Joe Show.Dick has shared river stories both on and off trips over the years, and people always told him he should write a book. A few years ago he started writing about offbeat events and oddball people he had encountered, and encouraged fellow outfitter and long-time friend Bob Volpert to do the same. They encouraged other river guides and outfitters to submit stories, and after a few years they had enough for a book. The book is titled Halfway to Halfway and Other River Stories. The book is doing so well that Linford and Volpert are planning a sequel, to be titled Halfway to Halfway and Back.
