About the Author

James Lancel McElhinney

JAMES L. MCELHINNEY studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has a BFA from Tyler School of Art and an MFA in painting from Yale University. His teaching career began as an assistant to Bernard Chaet at Yale, followed by appointments at Bowdoin College, Moore College of Art, Skidmore College, East Carolina University, University of Colorado and Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. He has conducted oral history interviews for the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American, Columbia University, The Frick Center for the History of Collecting and other organizations. McElhinney has taught painting and drawing at the Art Students League of New York since 2005. He is the author of one book on painting and two books on drawing as well as numerous essays and articles related to the arts. He lives in New York City with his wife, the noted art historian Dr. Katherine E. Manthorne.
