About this item

(In French, with English subtitles) When I first saw this older film, well over thirty years ago, I thought it was hilarious.  Would its re-release reveal a movie just as funny?  It is a bit dated, and you may find some of the humor strained, but it remains a solid comedic farce of the best kind.  The story begins with a conflict – not a war, but definitely an internecine struggle between two factions within the French Secret Service.  Number Two wants to push Number One out of the way, but Number One, onto the plot, hatches a plan of his own to trap his internal nemesis.  He contrives a setup, pulling in a hapless musician, randomly chosen for no other reason than that as he arrives in the airport from his jet flight, he wears mixed-matched shoes.  Poor François does not know what is going on, that he is even being followed by unsuspecting Number Two’s men.  But he does know that his lover and best friend’s wife is becoming too much for him. He needs some breathing room and a new direction, especially since the members of this love triangle all play in the same orchestra.  So when the ravishing Christine is sent to him as a honey trap, François falls for her in an instant.  The silliness proceeds, with rival spies and the love triangle falling all over each other in cleverly done pratfalls, mishaps, and hijinks.  It’s all in good fun, although the entitlement of one to privacy is pointedly offered to us in the epilogue as a reminder of what is lawful and what is not, in real life.
