About this item

With their 1990 release, BORN TO SING, En Vogue set the standard for contemporary R&B girl groups. On their follow-up, FUNKY DIVAS, they raised the level by several notches. They diversified the material, delving into rock ("Free Your Mind") , classic pop ("Yesterday") , and classic soul (Giving Him Something That He Can Feel") with equal facility. In addition, the divas began to transcend the production work of their svengalis, Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy and the individual identities of Dawn Robinson, Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones started to emerge. Their vehement, soaring voices carried them to superstardom, and its attendant problems ensued for the group. Ellis went on to record a solo disc, and Robinson left the fold to work on hers.
