About this item

(In English and Swedish, with English subtitles) A joint Swedish-American TV production, Welcome to Sweden will give you more than a few laughs, especially since Amy Poehler was involved in its production.  The comedy is based on the experiences of Greg Poehler, Amy’s brother, and features both Greg and Amy in the cast.  It aired in Sweden first, then in the U.S., so you will not be surprised to hear English as well as Swedish spoken in the various episodes.  The stories revolve around Greg, who has moved to Sweden with his girlfriend, Emma. He is trying to fit in with her family in particular and Swedish society in general, with his lack of language skills proving to be a big hindrance.  But more than that, his big-hearted American ways don’t always translate well in the perhaps more reserved Swedish culture.  Despite Greg’s continued attempts to fit in, he seems to be jeopardizing his relationship with Emma every time he thinks he is making progress with this assimilation thing.  Although my best friend of Swedish descent assures me that Swedish people are not quite as they are portrayed in this sitcom, Emma’s family is riddled with eccentricities and quirky ways, making them actually more interesting than Greg.  But don’t watch this to analyze Swedish culture.  It plays for laughs and doesn’t take itself seriously, so why should you?  Just enjoy it and remind yourself that Sweden isn’t really like this…or is it?
