About this item

(In French, with English subtitles) If you have read Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, you may find this French comedy a laugh, or maybe not.  The underlying story is rather clever.  Charlie and Gemma Bovery are a British couple, who move to Normandy, where Gemma comes under the scrutiny of Joubert, the local baker, who, struck by the similarity of their names to those of the characters in the classic novel, clearly one of the baker’s favorite novels, wonders to the point of obsession if Gemma will recreate the tragic story of Madame Bovary, right before his eyes.  He even sees a potential lover in a neighboring aristocrat.  While Joubert lurks around, spying on Gemma, trying to see if she will fall for this new beau or not, he also manages to teach her something of proper bread making.  Funny in parts and just silly in others, this is more of a comedic romp and makes no pretense about being a serious retelling of the classic novel.  Flaubert purists need not watch; others may just have fun with it.
