About this item

(In German, with English subtitles) This film is something of a cross between a biopic and a costume drama, focusing on the love triangle of Friedrich Schiller and two sisters, Charlotte von Lengefeld and the married Caroline von Beuliwitz.  Charlotte and Caroline come from a family that has fallen from its position in society because of the death of their father.  Caroline’s marriage to a wealthy aristocrat has saved the family from poverty but has left Caroline in perpetual unhappiness – until Charlotte by happenstance meets the dashing Schiller – both a handsome man and a poet.  In Weimar Germany of the late 18th century, these were the two best qualifications for love.  The three young people form a sturdy relationship based on literature, love, and honesty, but it is Caroline who drives the three.  She urges Charlotte to marry the somewhat oblivious Schiller and requests Schiller’s aid in editing her own literary work, a book that proves to be a smashing success.  If you like historical dramas or romances, this might be the movie for you, with its period costumes, good-looking characters, and pleasing settings.
