Melanie Sue Bowles is the founder of Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary, one of the most successful, longest existing facilites for rescued horses in the United States. In 2005 PBS filmed a documentary about Proud Spirit, citing their program as "exemplary" and a "model for other organizations." Melanie and her husband Jim also unofficially rescue dogs, and there have even been a few pigs in the mix.
