Micah Brown, an African-American volunteer, takes a teaching job in a remote Ghanaian village, where he is eager to help his students fulfill their potential. There he meets Tuigi, a bright 14-year-old girl who must atone for a deadly accident committed by her father and, according to religious custom, must abandon her education and be offered as a slave to the gods. Locked in a battle between history, church and state, Micah is determined to give Tuigi a life outside tradition.
